Doubao Phone Gen 2 - the Chinese agent smartphone arrives at WAIC 2026

Nubia (ZTE) and ByteDance announce the imminent release of a smartphone whose OS is structured around the Doubao agent. This is not a skin - it's an architectural bet.

The fact

According to Pandaily (July 11, 2026), Nubia (ZTE's premium brand) and ByteDance will unveil at WAIC 2026 (late July, Shanghai) the second generation of Doubao Phone - a smartphone whose system layer is built around the Doubao agent. The first generation (late 2025) was mostly a marketing stunt; this one includes an on-device 7B model for local orchestration and switches to Doubao cloud for complex tasks.

Our analysis

This is the third "AI-native" hardware bet in China, after the Honor Magic V (Qwen) and the Xiaomi 15 (HyperOS + MiLM). What sets apart the Doubao Phone Gen 2: ByteDance doesn't do hardware, it brings its agents (search, video creation, Douyin e-commerce), and Nubia provides the hardware. The bet: that the agent becomes the entry point of the phone, not the apps.

It remains to be seen if usage follows. The first generation, discreet in volume, mostly served as a beta test. But ByteDance has a massive advantage: Doubao is already installed on hundreds of millions of devices in China - the hardware becomes a real-world test of an OS where the agent is first.

• The price (expected ¥3,999 to ¥5,999, or ~$550-830) and sales volume in the first 90 days.
• A potential international export via TikTok - which Beijing doesn't particularly appreciate at the moment.
