SoftBank, Sony and Honda lock in Japan's AI stack with Nvidia at the center

Nikkei Asia documents the alignment of SoftBank, Sony, and Honda on a common Japanese AI stack, powered by Nvidia. After Toyota (Woven City), Fujitsu, and Yaskawa, the consumer trio completes the circle: Nvidia becomes the OS of the Japanese industry.

The fact

On July 16, Nikkei Asia reports that SoftBank, Sony, and Honda are jointly leading a Japanese AI chip project based on Nvidia's silicon. The setup is not described as a formal consortium but as an alignment of orders and architectures. This adds to announcements about Toyota (Woven City, publi #1153), Fujitsu, and Yaskawa (physical AI).

Our analysis

The message is geopolitical. After Jensen Huang's visit (another Nikkei article from the same day), Japan is securing its AI sovereignty with Nvidia rather than a domestic stack. Mirroring the china-sovereign-compute thread: China is building an alternative stack due to lack of access, Japan is building with the American stack because it has access. Two opposing AI sovereignties, same ambition - avoiding dependence on the other bloc.

Nvidia's countermeasures (guarantees of Blackwell/Rubin capacity); coordination with METI (subsidies, public procurement); industrial distribution of the components (SoftBank/ARM, Sony/imaging, Honda/robotics-automotive). The trio signals industrialization, not R&D.
