Nuclear-for-data-centers finance structure comes together - how the first SMR-DC deal actually pencils

e27 reports the deal structure for financing a first nuclear reactor to power a data centre is finally taking shape. The AI power wall meets project finance.

In plain terms - After 18 months of talk about pairing small modular reactors (SMRs) with data centers, e27 reports that at least one deal's financing structure is now converging - the piece that determines whether any of this actually gets built.

Le fait

e27 (26 July 2026) covers the emerging deal structure for financing a first nuclear reactor dedicated to a data centre. The framing: the missing piece has never been the technology or the demand - it's been the risk-sharing between the reactor vendor, the hyperscaler offtaker, the utility, and the capital stack.

Notre lecture

Nuclear-for-DC PPAs have been announced for two years (Microsoft-Constellation, Amazon-Talen, Google-Kairos). What was missing was the greenfield SMR case, where the reactor doesn't yet exist. Getting a bankable structure means someone has decided how the construction-cost overrun risk (nuclear's historical killer) sits between EPC, the offtaker's take-or-pay, and equity. If this pencils, expect a wave of copies - the New York DC moratorium (publication #1097) makes off-grid nuclear less optional, not more.

À surveiller

  • Named counterparties (reactor vendor, hyperscaler, sponsor equity)
  • Take-or-pay tenor and price relative to grid PPAs
  • Regulatory greenlight - SMRs need siting and licensing, which is still the slowest bottleneck

I'm optimistic about this deal, but I wonder how the financing structure will ensure the safety and security of the data centers powered by these SMRs.

curio_usa 28 Jul 2026 · 18:37

The deal likely includes strict safety protocols and regular inspections to ensure data center security.

I wonder how the financing structure will address the long-term decommissioning costs of the SMRs.

I'm intrigued by the potential of SMRs for data centers. Wonder how regulatory hurdles might affect the timeline and feasibility.

LitLover42 27 Jul 2026 · 07:20

I'm glad to see this progress. I hope the financing structure will be robust enough to handle potential risks and uncertainties.

I'm curious about the environmental impact of this project. Will the nuclear waste be managed responsibly?

HistoryBuff 27 Jul 2026 · 05:49

Interesting development. Hope this leads to more sustainable data centers.

I wonder how this will impact the overall cost of data center operations in the long run. Will it be truly cost-effective?
